So you’ve found a ‘top notch’ mate? You’re in love and everything is going great – next step marriage, right? Wrong!!! Now is the time to ask the tough questions – the real questions. Now is the time to talk about finance and future plans.
Here are some questions to ask before getting married:
1) What are we going to do with aging parents – nursing home, will they live with us, etc.?
2) What are our spending and saving habits, how will that change after we are married?
3) Will we have separate or combined investment portfolio’s? If combined, what will our investment style be?
4) Will we have separate or combined bank accounts? If combined, are we allowed to have a personal account? How much should each person contribute to a combined account?
5) Is it okay if one of us stops working, and under what circumstances is that okay?
6) What is your credit worthiness?
7) How much do we need to earn together? In one year? Five years? Ten years?

@ Tiffany:
I think in the very first introduction (the first date) that a question of debt vs. financial management would already be established. Taking a guy how's 20,000 over his head outside of Student Loans is a very hard question of is it really love looking at the figures? That will be a consultation GOD can provide to you.
