Although I am happy that Disney finally has a Princess of African American descent there still is a nagging thought surrounding the movie. I am not even going to complain about the Princess’s suitor being a White man. This is 2009 and interracial couples exist. But, did the damn Princess have to be a frog? Of all the animals in the animal kingdom, they had to make this princess a frog. The princess that would go down in Disney history as one of the first African American princesses. Plus, she was a frog for much of the movie. Disney is known for having undertones in their movies. I know there are some people who will say ” well at least we have a princess. Just be happy that they gave us a frog.” I get that, I really do and still I say why settle? Screw that. African Americans waited for years for Disney to recognize them and they do this by making the princess an ugly creature like a frog? Pssst. I am disappointed. The old saying beggars can’t be choosers comes to mind right now. Still, I wish that Disney would have had the forethought to perhaps make the princess a more desirable animal. Weren’t there any other fairytales that Disney could have covered and applied with an African American lead character? One where the Princess would not turn into an frog or a cockroach or any other amphibian. Dig deeper.
Also, is it just me or does Dr. Facilier look like a pimp? The purple outfit, the gap in the tooth, the cane! I’m just sayin… I know he is the villain of the film but did they have to pimp him out like that? Am I digging too deep? It is up for debate.
