For years and years the phenomenon about “Good hair” has plighted the Black culture and until not it has never been the discussion of a movie. It took comedian Chris Rock to tackle the sensitive topic in the movie Good Hair. Is there such a thing as “good hair”? Some would say people with “good hair” have curly, long, locks. Others would say “good hair” is hair that is not thick or coarse. If you are bi-racial then you are bound to have “good hair” right? Either way it is a sensitive subject because for some your hair is what defines you. It is what makes you feel pretty or ugly. This is something that starts from early childhood when little Black girls prefer to play with the White dolls because they feel that they are the prettier ones or they can play with their hair easier. Then they look in the mirror and see that they have no features that resemble the doll, not to mention their hair is totally different. Then the self doubt and hate comes. We want to make changes to feel pretty. Before you know it we are all grown up and buying the silky pack of weave from the Korean store. Am I lying? These are all topics that the movie is going to touch. I’m excited to see how honest the Black actresses will be about their own image issues.
Like many women, I love getting my hair done. Not only because I like how I look afterwards but because I love getting pampered and having someone wash and scratch my scalp. It is one of the most relaxing feelings. I never been into weave and have always been told that I had “good hair” because it was thin and I did not need relaxers. I did not understand it at the time. I thought that people with good hair were bi-racial and good hair meant it was curly. See how brainwashed I was? We all are on some level whether you want to admit it or not. So my question to you is: Is there a such thing as “good hair”? Is all hair good whether it is relaxed, curly, or straight? Is there “bad hair”? Are you past the point where being defined as having either matters to you?
